Untitled (Still-life w/wine bottle and apples), 12"x16", oil on canvas, (probably before 1970), Collection of Carol Turner

RUDOLPH (RUDY) HELMO

Member 1947-1955 (and possibly into the 1960s)
“Rudy Helmo
A great teacher. He gave a lot of practical help with the basics (like illustrating perspective on the top surface of a bowl). He never worked on anyone’s canvas. I learned as much from him as I did getting my masters in art at SUNY. He had a very agreeable personality and a good sense of humor.
He would always start a demo (stillife) with a drawing in burnt umber, then do an underlying wash in cad orange, leaving the light places white. He rarely needed to correct his drawing or composition.
Every year or so he had a sale at his home in Spiegletown, and that’s where I purchased the little still life for $15 I think.
Finally, don’t remember when, he decided to retire and move back to Germany. We were all sorry to see him go.”
A memory from Carol Turner (AAG member in 1960s and current member of Bethlehem Art Association)
